The Sandstone, Arbutus & Kelp
Collection
I grew up on the beaches of Southwest BC, a place where sandstone, arbutus and kelp (along with a bunch of other seaweeds) come together to create an environment that is lush and surreal. I'd go so far as to say magical, because much of my time spent there figures largely among my peak experiences. Each element/organism is iconic on its own, with a strong visual presence that is instantly recognizable, making them great subjects for a collection such as this one. The only thing missing is that sea-on-shore smell, salty and earthy, a kind of dark green smell encrusted with white. And various cuts and scrapes from the barnacles, of course. Add the smells of sunscreen, bug dope and disinfectant.
